Department of National Defence (DND) is the department of the Government of Canada that supports the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) as a Defence Team. National Defence is the largest department of the Government of Canada in terms of budget and staff. The DND is the department with the largest number of buildings (6,806 in 2015).
DND is headed by the Minister of National Defence, a federal Cabinet Minister who presides over all matters relating to national defence, presently Harjit Sajan. The Associate Minister of National Defence supports the Minister of National Defence by ensuring that CAF members have the equipment they need to do their jobs.
Under the National Defence Act, which was passed by Parliament on June 28, 1922, DND carries out responsibilities within the Defence Portfolio to coordinate resources within the Canadian Armed Forces, the Communications Security Establishment, and Defence Research and Development.
